Music at the Library in March

In a previous post we gave you an overview of the many arts programs that take place every month at the Library.

Now I would like to tell you about three exciting musical events that are coming up in March.  All these programs take place in the Central Library, Microsoft Auditorium.  Check the Library Calendar of Events for more details.

University of Washington World Series Preview

calebasse_1Every year the University of Washington brings top-notch performers from all over the world to the stage of Meany Hall in four series: World Dance, World Music & Theatre, Solo Piano, and International Chamber Music.
Come and find out about the wonderful and varied performances coming up at Meany Hall this spring.  Gretchen Douma, the Series’ Public Relations Director, will describe what we have to look forward to. Her talk will be illustrated with video clips of the performers.

Pacific Northwest Ballet Preview:
Broadway Festival

If you are thinking of attending a Pacific Northwest Ballet performance, be sure to catch one our previews, which take place a few days before the opening of each new PNB program. Doug Fullington, a popular and entertaining speaker on dance, presents these informal previews, which include videotaped dance excerpts.

The March program, “Broadway Festival”, consists of four ballets:

  • Carousel (A Dance) – Music by Richard Rodgers, Choreography by Christopher Wheeldon
  • Take Five…More or Less – Music from jazz scores by Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, Choreography by Susan Stroman
  • Slaughter on Tenth Avenue (from “On Your Toes”) – Music by Richard Rodgers, Choreography by George Balanchine
  • West Side Story Suite – Music by Leonard Bernstein, Choreography by Jerome Robbins.

The Ladies Musical Club Presents:

Noon, Wednesday, March 11

If you love opera and fine singing, don’t miss this concert. The performers are Sharon Karsner, mezzo-soprano, Leslie Stark and Krista Mercier, sopranos and Ryan Bede, baritone.  They will perform arias and duets from:

  • Manon and Werther by Massenet
  • Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saens
  • Faust by Gounod
  • The Pearl Fishers by Bizet 

This concert is another in a very popular series of Opera Workshops that the Ladies Musical Club has presented here. Earlier programs have included highlights from the operas of Mozart and Puccini, as well as The Wonderful World of Operetta. ~Stan
