We’re excited about the opening of the Seattle Repertory Theatre‘s production of David
Ives’ Venus in Fur this Friday! A Broadway hit, this cheeky, sexy play finds playwright Thomas Novachek at a loss. There are simply no actresses talented enough to play his leading lady. Then in walks Vanda, a mysterious siren with the uncanny ability to inhabit his character. All bets are off when the audition quickly escalates into a seductive power play. Venus in Fur keeps you on the edge of your seat as you question “who is really in charge here?”.
We’ve selected some Library materials to complement this delightful, saucy story.
Hotel Iris by Yoko Ogawa
When she overhears a domineering man in another room, Mari harkens to her master’s voice. A riveting novel of romantic obsession and domination.
Venus in Furs by Leopold Sacher-Masoch
First published in 1870, this tale of the suprasensual Severin’s slavish worship of his dominant mistress Wanda helped inspire the term ‘masochism.’
Late Night Tales
Including both The Velvet Underground’s Venus in Furs and Vampire Hands’ Safe Word, this dark, sexy mix tape would make a good soundtrack for Ives’ play.
Secretary
A submissive secretary finds her new position meets her every need. This darkly comic film is based on Mary Gaitskill’s short story of the same name from the 1988 collection Bad Behavior.
Here’s our complete list for Seattle Rep’s VENUS IN FUR: Beyond the Theatre.
