For several years now, audiences have been flocking to our twice monthly lunch hour program Thrilling Tales: A Storytime for Grownups, and every so often someone tells us they wish there were an evening version of these readings. Well, it’s finally happening!
Staring on June 18, we’ll be sharing some of our favorite suspenseful tales in monthly readings at the Central Library. We’re calling it Thrilling Tales After Dark. Written by a variety of master storytellers such as Ray Bradbury, Shirley Jackson and Truman Capote, the stories range from wondrous to eerie to truly terrifying, and are drawn from the early years of Thrilling Tales. All readings run from 7-8 p.m., at the Central Library’s Microsoft Auditorium, finishing in just under an hour, and they are free. Take a look at what’s coming up:
- Monday, June 18. The Anything Box, by Zenna Henderson. Is it just make believe? Little Sue Lynn caries your heart’s desire in her cupped hands, and she will make you believe.
- Monday, July 23. Dying Room Only, by Richard Matheson. On a hot desert highway, a last chance cafe becomes just that for an unsuspecting couple. Roadside terror, from a master.
- Monday, August 13. End of the Day, by Jane Speed. “I swear, I’d lose my head if it wasn’t connected to my shoulders! Now where on earth did I put my husband?”
- Monday, September 17. The Possibility of Evil, by Shirley Jackson. Upright and exacting Miss Adela Strangeworth has always minded everyone else’s business but her own – until now.
- Monday, October 22. The Whole Town’s Sleeping, by Ray Bradbury. Walking home from the picture show, with a killer roaming the streets. Shadows loom, but just a few more minutes and Lavinia will be safely home…
- Monday, November 19. Miriam, by Truman Capote. Capote’s first published story is a masterpiece of creeping unease. Shy retiring Mrs. Miller makes a friend – a little girl – and her life will never be the same.
- Monday, December 17. Back for Christmas, by John Collier. Homicide: the gift that keeps on giving. Also, Crime’s Christmas Carol, by Novell Page. In the depths of the Depression, a desperate couple seek a little Holiday cheer.
