The Hello Genius: Milestones books by Michael Dahl are getting rave reviews from me, a parents of little ones, and the childcare centers I’ve shared them with! This board book series covers classic topics such as going potty, saying “please,” “thank you,” and “I’m sorry,” techniques for calming down, and sharing, all with excellent illustrations and age appropriate language. This series bridges the gap between helpful caregiver tool and fun read aloud for the 2-5 year old crowd.
My family’s favorite book in this series is Little Monkey Calms Down. This story illustrates some big monkey emotions that are easily decodable even for the youngest audience. Unlike some other behavior books for kids, this one is perfectly crafted for a preschool audience by keeping it simple and funny. The story follows Little Monkey as he goes from being very upset to practicing some helpful calming down techniques until he is ready to have fun again. The skills Monkey practices are easy to emulate at home so you and your little monkey are ready when the big feelings come up.
If you don’t see the topics you’re interested in from the first series be sure to explore Dahl’s other board book topics like Little Dinos Don’t Bite, and Little Tiger Picks Up.
Because these titles are board books you won’t find them in the library catalog but they are available in the board book collection at your local library branch. If you don’t see them, please ask! And the best part about library board books? You don’t have to check them out! Enjoy them as long as you’d like and return them whenever you’re done. I hope you find them as useful as I have.
