How do you stay cool at the Library?
On Wednesday afternoon, July 16, when outdoor temperatures hit 90 degrees, we stopped by the Green Lake Branch to check in with a few patrons about how the branch’s first summer with air conditioning was treating them. The branch was packed all afternoon, with most seats in the reading room and the computer area filled.
Rosie is a graduate student in elementary education and a nanny. She visits the branch up to three times a week with her charges and by herself to study and hang out. “We are here today because of the air conditioning. It is a godsend.” Rosie is always looking for third places that are free and appreciates the sense of community at the branch.

Katy is a public health worker who moved near the Green Lake Branch about four years ago. While Katy was disappointed when the branch closed for the renovation in 2023, she is happy with the branch’s remodel, especially the fact that it doesn’t close on hot days anymore! “The library is one of the few public spaces in Seattle that has air conditioning. And to be able to have a place to get out of the heat is so crucial.” Katy comes to the branch mostly to pick up holds, but sometimes stays to co-work and read.

Saba walked here with her two children. “The air conditioning is great. We walked here and it was so hot and when we got here we were so happy.” Now that school is out, Saba says, they come to the Green Lake Branch more often. Her older son likes to place holds on books while at the branch, and then can walk over later and pick them up himself. “I’m trying to keep the kids busy.”
