Seattle residents now have two colorful new ways to check out books and show their love for libraries.
For the first time in eight years, The Seattle Public Library has launched two new Library card designs, by local artists Diego Fidelis and Ning Wan. The theme for the cards is how the Library fosters different types of connection.
The Journey Card by Diego Fidelis takes your eyes on a journey to find hidden figures and objects, inspiring patrons to imagine where they will go with a Library card.

The Book Club Card by Ning Wan depicts a marine animal book club, featuring iconic sea creatures from Puget Sound. It shows that the Library has a book for everyone and is a gathering place for all patrons.

We offer six designs in total, including the two new cards, three “icon cards” designs, and a “classic card” designed in the 1990s. Every card except the classic card is available as wallet cards, keychain cards or a combination of both.

How to get a Library card with a new (or old) design
If you already have a Library card:
- If you already have a Seattle Public Library card but want to trade it in for a new design, stop by any Library location and staff can help you.
- One important note: You will receive a new Library card number with your new card — a small sacrifice that is hopefully worth it!
If you don’t yet have a Library card
- Stop by any Library location with a valid ID. Most people who live, work, or go to school in Seattle can get a free library card.
- You can also apply online at www.spl.org/Card. Once we verify your address, you will have full access to all Library materials. If you would like a physical Library card, you’ll need to stop by a Library location.
- The Library has card applications in four other languages, as well as in English.
Just for kids: “My first Library card” bag
- Kids up to age 6 who are signing up for their first library card can receive a free “I got my Library card!” tote bag. (Thanks to the The Friends of The Seattle Public Library for these great bags!)

By the way, there is no minimum age for getting a library card. Even newborns qualify!
Library pro tip: Download the app!
- We encourage you to download the Library’s mobile app to manage your account. It is soooo useful. You can use the app to place holds, track loans and holds, book a meeting room, and find out about programs and services.
- The app includes a digital library card, and you can even use the app to bypass the new self-checkout machines and check out materials while at a library!
- The app also allows you to manage multiple library accounts, which is helpful for families. Find out more at www.spl.org/app.
