DEPRESSION: Out of the Shadows, a PBS documentary premiering nationwide on May 21, 2008, at 9 p.m. on KCTS, navigates the disease’s complex terrain, highlighting the latest scientific research and innovative treatments. Depression is also explored through the voices of families and individuals coping with its wide-ranging effects, offering greater awareness and diminished stigma around a disorder that ultimately touches everyone.

The event is held on Wednesday, May 7th, 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Microsoft Auditorium. The speakers are DaShaun “Jiwe” Morris, who just published the book, War of the Bloods in my veins : a street soldier’s march toward redemption and his mentor, Terrie Williams, author of Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We’re Not Hurting.

  1. Did anyone see the presentation at the Central Library on this? I couldn’t make it and it looked very interesting.

The statistic “one-in-four young adults will experience a depressive episode by age 24” surprises me. It feels like a much higher percentage of my friends went through at least a brief but intense period of depression. As far as I know, not many of them sought professional help, though. I suppose that might be telling.

  2. Library staff

Hi, I am library staff and was there. Not seeking professional help was one of the main things the speakers pointed out. Both Jiwi (pronounced as “Jawi”) and T. Williams described the difficulties of recognizing and admitting the problem (having depression). The other thing mentioned was speaking out and sharing the story. According Terrie, it is “a powerful tool to treat depresson”. The whole documentary (90 min.) will be broadcasted on May 21st at KCTS. You will see Jiwi and Williams in the documentary.
