With unemployment in Washington on the rise and inflation in the news, you might be thinking about how you can brighten your job situation. I bet these women, working in a shoe factory, would have loved a better job.
You’re in Luck! We’ve compiled a collection of resources to help you search for a job or even change careers. We rounded them up in the Jobs and Careers category of our Databases and Websites.
One thing you see is the NWjobs listing from the Seattle P-I and Seattle Times. The cool thing about using this website is you search for jobs by a keyword. Just type in a name of a job or company you’d like and hit enter. Voila! Job listings appear. When you find a job you’d like, the application is right online for you to fill out.
There are other job listings on the site. Worksource Washington is a big one. USJOBS is another. There are listings for interships and information about some very cool student jobs at Seattle Public Library. There are many resources to search for jobs and job information here.
But, my favorite tool in the Jobs and Careers category is the Learning Express Library. This database provides free practice tests from everything from fourth grade reading to the LSAT for entrance into law school! There are so many entrance tests for careers here, there’s truly something for everybody. Want to be a firefighter? Nurse? Real estate agent? Civil servant? Cosmetologist? Whenever I demonstrate this database at schools or community centers, people love the versatility of it.
Do you need your GED? Or U. S. citizenship? Will you be taking the SAT or ACT to get into college? Do you need to take a GRE to get into graduate school? The list of possibilities is long and rewarding.
Take the free practice tests to prepare for your real test. Research has shown that the simple act of practicing for a test on a computer that will be delivered on a computer makes your scores go up. Each time you finish a test, you can get your scores, the correct answers and even an explanation of the question.
Learning Express Library also offers online courses to help you improve your grades and sharpen your skills. Improve your reading or math at your own pace for free.
You will need your Seattle Public Library card number and PIN to log in to the site from home or another computer. When you start, you’ll create an account with any name and password you choose. Then the site remembers you each time you log in. You can stop a test before you finish and come back to the place you stopped to resume testing.
It’s free, it’s convenient and it’s waiting for you. So take this job and … well, you know the rest.
