Night Shift introduces readers to a super-powered hunter called Jill Kismet. Jill is one of the few people brave enough to stand between humanity and all the demons of the nightside. When something from the dark tears through five cops and continues on with a killing spree that spreads death across the city, Jill must sift through the lies and manipulations of the demon world to find the truth.
When you read a lot of urban fantasy, you get used to blood and gore and high body counts. It takes something special to stand out against the sea of supernatural parallel universes. Lilith Saintcrow has a talent for painting her worlds with a dark oppressiveness that breeds a sense of unease. When you have that, you don’t really need to tear apart five people and spread their pieces across a highway—which she does anyway. It might sound strange, but the overkill cancels out the overall creepiness of the book. Still, Saintcrow uses some bizarre and beautiful imagery, which makes Night Shift worth reading and creates a pleasing start to the brand new Jill Kismet series. Readers who enjoy Jill Kismet’s world might also like the Dante Valentine novels by the same author. Check them out and let us know what you think.
