Book Review: Magic to the Bone by Devon Monk

Magic to the Bone introduces readers to an intriguing new world of dangerous urban fantasy. In a new society of legalized, scientific magic usage, there is a physical price to suffer through everyone time someone casts a spell-sometimes it’s a mild cold, sometimes it’s a severe headache, and for Allie Beckstrom, the price is occasionally a few of her more precious memories. Some people get around this painful downside by offloading their price onto others. Generally, convicted criminals are the target of choice, but when Allie investigates the circumstances surrounded a small boy and a powerful offload, she learns that not everyone is overly concerned with the law.

The structured magical society in Devon Monk’s story is the best part of Magic to the Bone. The main character, Allie, can get a bit overconfident and whiney at times and the flipping between points of view is oddly out of place. Furthermore, many of the secondary characters are much more interesting (and certainly more likable) than the heroine. This is the first book in a new series and it will be interesting to see how the overall story develops as more installments are published.
