Genealogy Classes at The Seattle Public Library

If you’re getting started researching your genealogy or if you’re having trouble finding information using online databases such as Ancestry, you may be interested in our upcoming genealogy classes and tours. We currently offer two classes – a beginning class, a database class – and a tour.

Beginning Your Family History

genealogy-by-the-bookAre you interested in finding out who your ancestors were and what they did? An introduction to family history research and an overview of resources available for research in the Seattle area will be presented by Darlene Hamilton, Senior Genealogy Librarian. Sample genealogy charts and bibliographies will be provided in the class. Pre-registration is not required.

These classes are scheduled for:
• Thursday, April 30, 5-6:30 p.m. at the Central Library
• Wednesday, May 13, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Lake City Branch. Register after April 15

• Wednesday, June 10, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Northgate Branch.  Register after May 15

Genealogy Databases & Web sitesgenealogy-on-the-pc

Do you want to learn how to use the electronic databases and Internet resources found on the Seattle Public Library’s Web site to search for your ancestors? HeritageQuest and Ancestry Library Edition are the focus of this workshop presented by John LaMont, Genealogy Librarian.

Prerequisite: computer basics or equivalent skill level. Registration is required. Please call the appropriate branch to register.

These classes are scheduled for:
• Thursday, May 14, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Lake City Branch. Register after April 15
• Thursday, June 4, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Northgate Branch. Register after May 15

Tour the Genealogy Collection at the Central Library

Did you know that The Seattle Public Library has the largest Genealogy Collection in the Pacific Northwest? Darlene Hamilton, Sr. Genealogy Librarian will be giving tours of the Genealogy section. A brief demonstration of the on-line catalog and the genealogy databases will be included. Pre-registration is required. Please call 206-386-4636 to register.

The tours are scheduled for:
• Wednesday, July 15, 5:30-7 p.m. Register after June 15
• Wednesday, August 27, 5:30-7 p.m. Register after July 15
