Despite my commitment one of the library’s favorite adages, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” I have learned that following a particular cover artist can lead the way to new and exciting titles in similar genres and sub-genres.
For instance, if you’ve read any urban fantasy, you’ve probably run across some seriously cool covers created by Chris McGrath. McGrath’s work can be seen on novels by Rob Thurman (author of Deathwish) and Jim Butcher (author of Turn Coat: A Novel of the Dresden Files), as well as in a multitude of other science fiction and fantasy titles.
If you visit McGrath’s website you can see a collection of the covers he’s created and follow the titles to some really great reads. Unfortunately the authors are not included with the pictures, making them somewhat difficult to track down. Luckily you can usually find the perfect story (and its cover) by searching by title in the Library catalog. Also, some of the covers you’ll see on his website are for books that have yet to be published, so try searching for those on one of the online bookstores to find a release date. Even if you aren’t trying to find a new title to read, it’s always fun to look at art and McGrath’s work is pretty awesome.
