Staff Favorites: Three more novels for your summer reading . . .

turnerRex Libris: I, Librarian by James Turner
Rex Libris, Head Librarian at Middleton Public Library, takes his place along other great librarian action adventure heroes like Nancy Pearl and Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Though he may look the part of a nerdy, mild mannered librarian with his suit and tie and thick glasses, do not underestimate Rex. With all the knowledge of the world at his fingertips (plus an arsenal of high-tech weaponry), Rex is able to track library miscreants to the far reaches of the galaxy to reclaim overdue library books. Librarians—the secret superheroes among us! ~Christiane W.

beattySlumberland by Paul Beatty
One of my favorite books from last year. DJ Darky goes on a quest to East Germany to find the reclusive jazz musician who can provide him with the one note that will complete his personal musical opus. The language in this light but deep novel hits the perfect rhythm, and the result is often hilarious, whether he’s describing his strange German girlfriends or the amazing collection of sounds in his mind.~ Wally B.

rogues-life-book-coverA Rogue’s Life by Wilkie Collins
Meet Frank Softly, black sheep of the family, med school dropout, scathing cartoonist, ex-con, painter of fraudulent old masters, coiner of false gold, catnip to the ladies, and as charming a narrator as you’re likely to come across. A breezy novella: Victorian lad-lit. ~David W.
