At 6 p.m. Thursday, August 12 in the Capitol Hill branch meeting room, local music author Gillian G. Garr will read from her book Return of the King: Elvis Presley’s Great Comeback. She’ll do a reading, show some video clips and then open up the floor for questions. Ms. Gaar is the author of several books about rock and roll. Her work has appeared in numerous music anthologies and periodicals, including Rolling Stone.
Return of the King is an account of the unexpected comeback of Elvis Presley. After starring in several unmemorable films and releasing some lackluster albums, it appeared that by 1967, Elvis’s career was on the skids. Amazingly, Elvis was able to rejuvenate his career, not only by freeing himself from managerial constraints, but also by hosting a spectacular TV special which reintroduced him to a legion of fans. His artistic revival was short lived, but it included the release of some of his greatest hits, such as “Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto”. Return of the King is based on new interviews, and reveals fascinating details about Elvis’s return to the spotlight.
So, even though the King won’t be able to attend (alas), you certainly can! All are welcome, and no tickets are required. Come and join us for an evening with Elvis and Gillian. For more information, contact the branch at (206) 684-4715.
