Brain Candy: MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead and Unfinished

Admit it, you (munch, munch) love that candy.

Well, do you have a sweet tooth for brain candy?

Recently I read MaryJanice Davidson’s latest in the Betsy the Vampire Queen aka the “Undead” series, Undead and Unfinished.

I went through the novel faster than a package of Fizzy Cola gummies…and it left me with a mild headache at the end, just like the candy.

For those who don’t know, Betsy the Vampire Queen is a 30-year-old who is killed in a car accident and wakes up Queen of the Dead. Improbable idea for a series, but it works because the author makes you not care that it is improbable.

And it does have many elements to it that attract people to a series…smart aleck dialogue, a cast of quirky people (and I don’t mean just the vampires), hot vampire sex and mouth-watering descriptions of shoes. Very, very expensive shoes.

In fact, the shoes play an important role in all of the novels in the series. Coveted, admired, kidnapped and sacrificed, they are actual characters.

Number 13 in the series (Undead and Unfinished) has Betsy and her sister, Laura (the child of Satan), going backward and forward in time as Betsy tries to deal with the death of a friend and Laura tries to decide if she wants to take over Hell.

If you have not read the series before, you might want to go back the first, Undead and Unwed.

  1. Was this ever a tv series or a movie?! That shoe fetish reminds me of Sex and the City.

  2. These are such a guilty pleasure! The first is definitely the best and reading them in order helps. If you like MaryJanice Davidson, you might want to try Katie MacAlister, a local author who also does witty, hot, vampire chick-lit.
