1-5 Overpass Songs

Over the I-5

Like most city commuters, I like to mix it up when it comes to how I get to and from work. I’ve recently moved, so now it’s full on bus both ways. But before I moved, I would usually walk to work and bus home or vice versa. I tried to vary my route so I wouldn’t get bored, but one constant remains when you’re walking from Capitol Hill to downtown: I-5.

I started noticing what song was playing on my iPhone when I passed over the huge, loud freeway on one of my little pedestrian overpasses. Once I started noticing, I got into the habit of posting updates to my Facebook wall. It’s fun to look back at what had popped up on my random playlist, and the kind of mood the music put me in on my way to work. It was also fun to see friends pipe up in the comments about how much they missed a band or hadn’t heard a song in years. Here are some of the last updates I posted:

I-5 overpass tune is Cocteau Twins’ “Iceblink Luck” or if you speak Elizabeth Frazer: “this chop chucked cherry pole which will burn this whole madhouse down”
(Lullabies to Violaine)

I-5 song is (my forever teenage crush) Michael Penn’s “No Myth”

  1. I am a big fan of your I-5 Song of the Day series, so much so that I can forgive the Michael Penn voice stuck in my head for that entire 24 hour period until a new song came along. I especially like when you mention someone I don’t know, and then seek out. Great song series, and great blog post!

What an interesting idea! Thanks for the links to the library catalog. Perhaps I shouldn’t admit this, but I don’t know any of those songs. The situation must be rectified!

  3. I like it too, and it is even better with links!

  4. As one of Jen’s Facebook friends, I’d like to point out that she doesn’t post her I-5 overpass songs often enough. Keep ’em coming! I’ll have to come up with a Vashon equivalent.

I very much look forward to your overpass sing of the day, it consistently demonstrates good taste and I’m often inspired to listen to it afterwords. It’s always diverse and unexpected. Me like.

I like this tradition. It’s very ‘big-girl-in-the-city-Mary-Tyler-Moore’ style.

  7. What? No Bing Crosby?! How do you make it through the day?

  8. Love this, too, and am also humming Michael Penn a lot ever since! My West Seattle bridge song: “You Are What You Love” by Jenny Lewis.
