Be Your Own Hero

I’m currently riding the wave of anticipation. One of my most beloved childhood spots is making a comeback. The Southgate Roller Rink in White Center is currently undergoing renovation and is slated to open in April! I’ve already decided to have my birthday there and it will be the go to activity for my nieces and me…and I hope to see more sightings of the Rat City Roller Girls!

I have a lot of pride for the good ol’ Dub-C since it was my childhood home. It’s growing and changing with new establishments like Full Tilt Ice Cream, Zippy’s Giant Burgers, and 3.14 Bakery, which have settled alongside the worn and loved locales like The Lockeroom, the Salvadorean Bakery, and White Center Pizza. I hope it maintains its eclectic and culturally beautiful population and holds on to its slightly hard edge.

To get everyone else amped up about this amazing undertaking, here are couple materials in our collection that should do just that:

Roller derby is making a new life for itself now more than ever. It has outgrown the endurance races on roller skates from the ’30s and has become a grass roots sport where the women dominate! In Blood on the Flat Track: The rise of the Rat City Roller Girls we follow the Rat Pack through their first two seasons. Watching their fan base go from hundreds to thousands these girls have formed bonds, acquired bruises, and all-in-all kicked some booty!

In Whip It, Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, we meet Bliss Cavendar, a shy misfit struggling to find herself despite her mother’s forced ideals of who her daughter should be. Bliss, played by Ellen Page, plots with her best friend, Pash, to attend a roller derby bout in Austin, Texas under the guise of attending a high school football game. Once there Bliss sees a whole new world of possibility with new friends and a new identity outside the confines of her home. But trying to keep her home life and her new life from colliding will be her biggest struggle of all.

Overjoyed this is happening! I was heartbroken when Southgate closed. Also, next month, Zippy’s Burgers is moving to White Center. Best burgers in Seattle, hands down. Would love to play some derby at Southgate again, too!
