Treasures of the Library: Old, Big Magazines

While perusing the magazine shelves at the Central Library one day, I came across some very large, very aged magazines we have in our collection that aren’t in publication anymore. I took a look. I was delighted with what I found inside. Each one is about  11 inches by 17 inches in size (they are in our “Oversize” magazine collection).

These are a few of the magazines I found very enticing:
The Graphic. An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper

Saturday, July 8, 1871

Full of beautiful illustrations, this was published in England and available (at the time) for sixpence halfpenny.
Apparel Arts
March, 1940

Published by Esquire Inc.

This men’s fashion magazine (featuring “authentic Esquire fashions”) has actual material swatches (shown here) that were meant to be chosen from for a man’s sports coat.
Illustrirte Zeitung

Weihnachts – Nummer 1920

A German news magazine with beautiful color illustrations. This picture is from the Christmas edition.

L’Illustrazione Italiana

9 Gennaio 1927

An Italian news magazine, out of Milan, with unique and beautiful photographs as well as illustrations.

Mid-Week Pictorial

Amiens and Its Beautiful Cathedral in the New Battle Area”

April 11, 1918

Photographic news magazine particularly covering the time of World War I.

All of these magazine treasures and many more can be found at the Central Library of Seattle Public Library. These small pictures don’t do them justice, so come have a look for yourself. They must be used in the library however, as they are reference materials and are often in delicate shape.
