For no apparent reason, I’ve read quite a few vampire books over the past two weeks. Maybe with the appearance of the sun and the first signs of spring I’ve tried to keep up my goth cred by playing some Bauhaus records and reading some dark vampire lit. I guess we’ll never know. Necroscope by Brian Lumley
Not your typical vampire book. Much scarier and visceral. This is the first in a series of books about vampires and psychic spies who can communicate with the dead and the paranormal intrigue between the world’s superpowers. If you like your horror on a grand scale with larger-than-life characters and intricate plotting, you’re gonna love this series.
The Red Duke by C.L. Werner
A brutal vampire lord on military campaign of vengeance, this mixture of military science fiction and horror is the polar opposite of those sparkly vampires that shall not be named. Seriously, this book with has some of the most overwhelming battle scenes and awesome scope I have ever read. It’s part of the Warhammer series, but this is a great place to jump in if you’ve never read any. This book will have you reading into the wee hours of the night so try and read it on a weekend!
The Vampire Archives
A comprehensive and essential survey of the history of vampires in literature. You get classic stories from the usual suspects like Stoker and Poe, but also hybrid tales from Lisa Tuttle, Gardner Dozois and host of others. This is a huge book (1000+ pages!) with even bigger scares.
