Science Fiction Fridays: Don’t wait! Act now!

Lots of great science fiction authors have books out this month, but with brand new books from well-known science fiction and fantasy authors there is usual wait list for their books at the Library. With that in mind, here is a list of author read alikes that are available right now while you’re waiting for you holds!

A really great author you might like if you are waiting for  John Scalzi’s Redshirts is Joe Haldeman’s Worlds.  In fact, everyone I recommend it to ends up loving it!  Interesting extrapolation of current events matched with character-driven stories and thrilling writing. What sets these authors apart is they both have palpable charm that comes through in their writing.

While ou’re waiting for China Miéville’s Railsea, try Reamde by Neal Stephenson.  It’s a fun and fast-moving sci-fi book with high-octane adventure married to the intricate plotting of Miéville, but more emphasis on keeping the pages turning. It’s a technically a techno-thriller, but is such a brainy book that label just doesn’t do it justice .

Finally, while you’re waiting for the new Mercedes Lackey book, Home from the Sea, try Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed. It has great world-building similar to Lackey’s style of starting with characters, but with an Islamic bent to the fantasy. Very original with the kind of heroes that are anything but cliched.
