I was a daddy’s girl growing up and there were two places I could find my dad in the house: the basement or the garage. The basement was usually for watching football games and the garage was for working on bikes, cars, and whatever else he could fix of our’s, or our neighbor’s. Whenever I would ask my dad what he was doing in the garage his response would always be, “You know your dad. He’s working, working all the time.”
My dad drove a 1977 Ford Ranger pickup. I loved everything about that truck. The camping trips my dad and I would take over to the Olympic Peninsula, hiding underneath the canopy when my dad would set it in the yard, how I would almost have to get a running start to get in the cab, and putting down sawdust on our driveway after my dad would change the oil. Do-it-yourself mechanics have access to photographs, diagnostics, step-by-step repair procedures, maintenance schedules, wiring diagrams, recalls and technical service bulletins for automobiles and light trucks. Some date as far back as 1929.
