You have asked for it, dear reader, and you shall have it! Below are three picks for the Halloween reads that will give you the most bang for your buck. Let these ghoulish delights work their black magic on you and enjoy!
The Traveling Vampire Show by Richard Laymon
Three friends discover the hidden darkness of the world on one idyllic summer day gone horribly awry. This might be the only Laymon book that actually features three dimensional characters; and boy, what characters they are! It’s a sad, brutal and sweet horror novel that reads like Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes on methamphetamines.
Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman
A disgraced college professor and his mistress move to an inherited former plantation in the hopes of starting over, but a family curse may put the whole town at risk. This was far and away one of the greatest horror novels I have ever read. Echoes of Stephen King at his best and Richard Matheson at his most tender are evident, but the storytelling is wholly original. Gorgeous and horrific. A must read for horror fans or anyone who loves a character-driven yarn.
Sparrow Rock by Nate Kenyon
A group of teens trapped in an underground bunker slowly discover that the world has been taken over by mutated insects. An apocalyptic story that is one part psychological thriller and one part icky bedbug infestation. Not for the squeamish, but fans of wormy horror that burrows into your brain, you can’t go wrong with this book!
