One thing I have learned as a parent is that every family has its own sense of humor. I have also learned that some children’s books you looked forward to reading to your own children aren’t always as awesome as you remembered them.
When you read aloud to children you have a captive audience. As they get older, they become an audience with ever-growing feedback skills. They tell you what they like, what they find funny, and what plain bores them.
Here are some of the picture books my family keeps checking out again and again. They are fun to read out loud–inventive and clever in their use of language–and have gotten the thumbs up from my two kiddos.
Are You a Horse? by Andy Rash
Roy’s friends give him a saddle for his birthday so he can ride a horse, but he has no clue what a horse is! Follow Roy on his silly journey to figure it out.
More Bears! by Kenn Nesbitt

Boing! by Sean Taylor
A man known as the Great Elastic Marvel, sometimes known as the Man with Rubber Legs, the Jumping Master, accidentally catapults out of his window via trampoline. He bounces to avoid certain death with some memorable exclamations like “Brimstone and Ginger!”
Tornado Slim and the Magic Cowboy Hat by Bryan Langdo
A coyote hands Slim a hat and a quest to find the Sheriff of Fire Gulch City. Slim discovers that the hat has special properties including the power to quench his thirst with ice-cold sarsaparilla.
The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman
It’s hard to imagine having seven kids, but this story features seven kids who are such picky eaters you will read it and weep.
