Seattle Rep’s The Hound of the Baskervilles

We’re excited about the opening of the Seattle Repertory Theatre’s production of ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ later this week! Expect suspense and laughs alike in this popular Sherlock Holmes tale adapted by veteran Seattle theatre artists David Pichette and R. Hamilton Wright. Pichette and Wright bring their witty sensibility to this classic Victorian whodunit about an attempted murder tied to the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound. The play will run from November 15 to December 15, 2013.

We’ve selected a few books and DVDs to complement this old-fashioned horror story. Here are a few.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle                                                                                                        “Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound!” The curse of the Baskervilles and the death under mysterious circumstances of Sir Charles Baskerville prompts Sherlock Holmes to accept the case and deputizes Dr. Watson as his eyes and ears. Upon arrival at gloomy Baskerville Hall in lonely, desolate Dartmoor, Watson learns of an escaped convict hiding on the moor.

The Hound of the Baskervilles: A Sherlock Holmes Graphic Novel by Ian Edginton                                                                         I.N.J. Culbard’s renderings of the beastly hellhound, the desolate moor and gloomy Baskerville Hall are even scarier than the classic Sidney Paget illustrations that accompanied the novel’s initial serialization in “The Strand” magazine.

The Sherlock Holmes Feature Film Collection (video)                                                                                                                                             Jeremy Brett (Sherlock) and Edward Hardwicke (Watson) were the actors in this version of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” televised on “Mystery!” in 1988 and collected here with four other Holmes mysteries. This adaptation is also available via hoopla, a streaming video and music service accessible with your Seattle Public Library card.

Cujo by Stephen King                                                                                     A blazing hot Pinto becomes a potential coffin for a mom and her son when the hellhound of Castlerock, Maine attacks. Who would suspect a family St. Bernard?
