Oh the weather outside is frightful, but the boom-box is so delightful…

I’m sure everyone has noticed: It’s getting A LOT colder outside. It’s getting bleaker and bleaker out there, and we’re all of course just trying to stay warm and awake. And as the holiday season sashays its way through our lives once again, Christmas music is everywhere, promising us tidings of good cheer as our light at the end of this very Pacific Northwest tunnel.

But, I think some of us can admit, all the joy and bright colors and images of lighted trees and gift idea brainstorming can become a little overwhelming. So, here are some albums that sit well with a cold, wintery night and perhaps a glass of hot chocolate – that aren’t Christmas music. Best part? They’re all available at the library!

Kate Bush, 50 Words For Snow

So, the title is probably a dead giveaway that this album is winter-appropriate. But what it doesn’t tell you is how wonderful of an experience it is. From the first track, where Bush sings from the perspective of a falling snowflake, to her duet with Elton John (“Snowed In At Wheeler Street”), this is an album which begs a dark and quiet room and your full attention.

Tears For Fears, Shout: The Very Best of Tears For Fears

First of all, I know that I am cheating a little by putting a “best of” album here. I was going to put Songs from the Big Chair (AMAZING), but I am obsessed with “Woman in Chains” right now, so I swerved a little. ANYWAY. Tears For Fears’s flawless mix of soft, luxurious musical soul and urban grit is the just the thing to partake in when you’re walking down the sidewalk bundled in your thickest winter coat and watching your breath puff out right in front of you.

James Blake, Overgrown

If there’s one season that works best with Blake’s music, it’s the wintertime. There is something comfortingly cold about his voice, keyboarding, beats, and his lyrics. All I know is I’ve been driving between SPL and Tacoma in the wintry darkness a lot lately, and this album is the perfect soundtrack.

  1. Great post! Love Kate Bush AND TFF! “Woman in Chains” is an underrated song–so good. Will have to check out James Blake. Can’t wait for part 2!
