It’s that time of year again! The Romance Writers of America (RWA) recently announced the winners of the 2014 RITA Awards, which recognize achievements in romantic fiction.
The Sweet Spot by Laura Drake
Drake’s novel indeed hit the sweet spot, snagging the Best First Book award. The story focuses on bull rider Jimmy and his ex-wife Charla, a divorced middle-aged couple who have had their share of tragedy, and who might be ready to hop in the saddle again. Drake released the second book in the series, Nothing Sweeter, earlier this year.
Crazy Thing Called Love by Molly O’Keefe
Speaking of former couples reconciling, Molly O’Keefe’s Best Contemporary Romance winner features a confident television host whose life is upended by the reappearance of her old flame: a rough-and-tumble hockey star named Billy! This is a surprisingly moving story of reconciliation between two people whose lives at first seemed destined, but whose destiny now requires hard work.
No Good Duke Goes Unpunished by Sarah MacLean
MacLean takes the Best Historical Romance crown again this year with the third entry in her Rules of Scoundrels series (she won last year for the first in the series, A Rogue by Any Other Name). This novel was also a recent favorite of librarians across the country. Be prepared for a smart, rewarding tale full of conniving characters. The second book in the series, One Good Earl Deserves a Lover, missed out on an award but is just as enjoyable as the other two.
Off the Edge by Carolyn Crane
This year’s Romantic Suspense winner stars a smoldering and smart spy with a love for words who falls for a woman on the run from her abusive husband. A page-turner with plenty of thrills, it’s a great match for fans of Suzanne Brockmann.
