Banned! Books in Drag is coming right up at Neighbours Nightclub on Saturday, September 26th from 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. This free, 21+ event will feature an amazing array of local talent including Aleksa Manila, La Saveona Hunt, Charlie Menace, Robbie Turner, Atasha Manila and more. David Schmader will be the MC for the evening and artist Ellen Forney, the illustrator of last year’s most challenged book, Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, will be making a special guest appearance.
To celebrate Banned Books Week, try some of these books that have been challenged and banned for LGBTQ content:
Picture book My Princess Boy by Cheryl Kilodavis was recently challenged at a public library in a Texas community, along with This Day in June by Gayle E. Pitman.
Washington author Brent Hartinger faced many challenges for his teen novel, The Geography Club, in which a gay teen finds out that he is not alone when a closeted classmate reaches out online. There is also a film based on the book.
Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel memoir Fun Home has come under fire at a couple of college campuses, most recently Duke University.
Teen novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky is on the top 10 most challenged books of 2014 list for homosexuality and other themes.
Malinda Lo’s Ash is a lesbian retelling of the Cinderalla story.
