The Seattle City Council was sworn in last month, and we here at ShelfTalk thought asking them about books would be a great way to learn more about our councilmembers. We asked them to tell us about books they’ve read (or almost read), books they want to read, books that inspired them, books they feel guilty about not finishing, or books that they think people should read. We’ll feature their responses as we receive them. Next up is Councilmember Tim Burgess.
The last book you read
While the City Slept by Eli Sanders. A gripping account of the 2009 South Park attacks and how we fail to meet the needs of mentally ill people.
A book that you often recommend to other people
Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. This is a powerful account from a lawyer who represents prisoners on death row in the American south. If you wonder about the relationship between the police and African Americans, read this book!
A book that you’re looking forward to reading next
Too High & Too Steep by David Williams. The story of how the early founders of Seattle dramatically changed the city’s landscape.
