Missing Live Music? We’ve Got You Covered

If you’re a live show junkie, Washington’s new “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order might have you feeling a little stir-crazy. Not to worry: we’ll be writing a series of posts that might help you get your music fix with the aid of streaming services like Freegal, Hoopla, and Kanopy

First up, let’s take a deep dive into the world of the 90s riot grrrl movement. Consider watching Elizabeth Moss’ feistiest performance yet (yes, even more hot-blooded than Offred of The Handmaid’s Tale) in the 2019 film Her Smell, available from Kanopy.

Films set in the punk and grunge era of the 90s seem to be few and far between. If that’s your scene, you’ll find a home in Her Smell. The camera follows the manic path of Becky Something, the frontwoman of a punk trio struggling to stay popular. Much of the film consists of live shows, intense backstage interactions, and emotional sessions at the recording studio. You’ll certainly come out of Her Smell with that same energy you feel after walking out of a really, really good show. You’ll also witness the complex journey of a woman behaving badly, but also finding redemption–a story we don’t see often enough on screen.

When you’re done with Her Smell, you’ll probably want to stream or download some essential jams. Some suggestions:
