It seems that the penguin is still a huge mystery to some. Penguins are some of the coolest (no pun intended) creatures around, but the majority of us never have any first-hand experience with them. This is usually due to geographical limitations; however, with our current climate of being stuck indoors, we can now digitally travel to three different worlds to experience these amazing and unique birds thanks to Hoopla.
Australian Penguins (2017)
Follow a group of Little Penguins, the only penguins to live and breed in Australia, that get into some wild and funny adventures. With most of these penguins in the film being rescued from hard times: injuries, being abandoned at birth or living as orphans – you can’t help but root for them in this wonderful story that illustrates how Australia’s Discovery Centre gives them a renewed chance to enjoy life. Also, for a limited time, this title is eligible to be borrowed without using one of your monthly credits through Hoopla’s Bonus Borrows Collection so act fast!
Penguin Highway (2018)
This one-of-a-kind animated film originates from the 2010 Japanese science fiction novel of the same name by Tomihiko Morimi. Like a cross between Pokémon and the classics from Studio Ghibli, this is a release that you probably missed but shouldn’t have. Variety called it: “An irresistibly out-there mystery that plays like a cross between “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Stranger Things,” if either of those influences’ sense of horror were replaced with wonder…”
The Pebble and the Penguin (1995)
Bring some musical joy into your home with this animated classic from the 90s starring Martin Short and James Belushi. Follow this tale of the shy penguin Hubie, who must win over the love of Marina, by presenting her with the most suitable pebble he can find. This may have been a film you saw as a child that you can now enjoy with your family in the comfort of your home. And if you still aren’t convinced – it was created by the same people who did All Dogs Go to Heaven… You can’t go wrong.
Unless you study penguins for a living, these birds are still relatively an anomaly to us; particularly as birds (do they fly or not?). As such anomalies, it never hurts to learn a little bit more about them and to enjoy the happiness they can bring us, whether animated or as the real thing!
You can use Hoopla to stream up to 15 movies or television shows per month to your computer or mobile device. Hoopla currently offers bonus borrows with 153 titles across movies, music, comics, and television through April 30th.
