Horrorfest on Kanopy

For those of us finding ourselves spending extra time with housemates or family, horror movie marathons are an excellent way to pass the days. If you’ve exhausted the movie options on your go-to streaming subscription service, Kanopy has an incredible selection of films that are free to access with your library card. Here are a few diverse and international scary films all released within the last 10 years that you can start watching tonight! (Important note: most of these films are only appropriate for adults; please use discretion if watching with younger family members.)

Florence Pugh makes up her mind in Midsommar

If you missed Midsommar when it came out in theaters last summer, now is a perfect time to catch up – for free! This film shows what happens when a small group of American graduate students travel to Sweden for an obscure (and chilling) midsummer festival, inverting traditional horror tropes as the entire plot unravels during the bright light of day.

Sheila Vand weighs her options in A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night.

A Persian-language American film released in 2014, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is the artsy, surreal, black-and-white vampire pulp movie you didn’t know was missing from your life. When a young boy falls in love with a wandering girl in the ghost town Bad City, he starts to learn there is more to her than initially meets the eye…

Lina Leandersson makes a new friend in Let the Right One In.

Staying on the theme of vampire movies, Let The Right One In is a Swedish film about childhood loneliness, friendship, and sacrifice. When 12-year-old outcast Oskar befriends little Eli, a pale girl who only comes out at night, they are soon forced to make tragic choices to keep their connection alive.

A night on the town in What We Do in the Shadows.

Next: What We Do in the Shadows. I know, I know, another vampire movie – but this one is FUNNY! Oscar-winning Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi and his crew of multi-generational vampire roommates give a joyous insight into their everyday lives as creatures of the night in this infamous mocumentary comedy. If you’re like me, this will be one to watch and re-watch again and again for years to come.

Noomi Rapace in The Girl Who trilogy: only scary if you’re evil

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Trilogy. While you may have already seen the American versions of these novels, it is definitely worth checking out their Swedish counterparts. This action-packed, thrilling trilogy follows punky tech genius Lisbeth Salander (portrayed beautifully by Swedish actress Noomi Rapace) as she investigates a series of gruesome, unsolved murders and becomes an icon of vigilante justice along the way.
