Chill Out With These Election Thrillers

Is it over yet? It may seem counterintuitive amid election suspense to dip into a white-knuckle political thriller, but for many of us a great thriller is just the catharsis we need. From our list of literary elections, here are some riveting reads.

Black Swan Rising, by Lisa Brackmann.
Investigating the background of the man who shot her and many others, reporter Casey Cheng uncovers ties to the  hate group #TrueMen, who have now set their sites on upending the upcoming election. Riveting and timely.

Are Snakes Necessary?, by Brian De Palma and Susan Lehman.
Young political groupie Fanny Cours will rue the day she becomes involved with philandering Pennsylvania Senator Lee Rogers, in this darkly humorous thriller with a venomous bite.

Grant Park, by Leonard Pitts.
Two journalists – one white, one black – recall the tempestuous days surrounding Martin Luther King Jr’s assassination in 1968 even as they uncover racist plots to upset the inauguration of Barack Obama four decades later.

The Big Lie, by James Grippando.
Battling for re-election, controversial President Malcolm MacLeod loses the popular vote by over five million but seems to have narrowly squeaked out an electoral victory – or did he? Challenger Evan Stahl isn’t having it, and the nation teeters on the brink of Civil War.
