New Fiction Roundup – June 2022

June delivers some great titles to kick off our summer reading, including a caper, some gothic suspense, immersive historical fiction, and the return of a favorite character.

6/7: Tracy Flick Can’t Win by Tom Perotta
Readers last saw Tracy in Perrotta’s darkly comic novel Election (and its movie adaptation starring Reese Witherspoon.) Now an assistant principal at a suburban high school, Tracy is energized by the prospect of a promotion and sets out to prove her worth. (general fiction) A Peak Pick!

6/7: Woman of Light by Kali Fajardo-Anstine

6/14: Flying Solo by Linda Holmes
Laurie Sassalyn returns to her small Maine hometown to handle the estate of her great-aunt, and discovers a mysterious wooden duck hidden away which leads her on a chase among antiques dealers and con artists, reconnecting with old friends and going on dates at the local library. (general fiction)

6/14: Horse by Geraldine Brooks
Brooks weaves together three storylines: that of an enslaved groom and the greatest racehorse in American history in 1850; a 1950s art dealer and the oil painting she becomes obsessed with; and an art historian and a scientist in 2019 both researching a horse. (historical fiction/general fiction)

6/14: The Maker of Swans by Paraic O’Donnell
In this gothic novel, Eustace the butler lives with Mr. Crowe, member of a secret order, and Mr. Crowe’s ward, Clara. An unexpected moment of violence brings Mr. Crowe’s past into the present, prompting Eustace to try to fix things and Clara to discover hidden abilities. (general fiction)

6/14: The Twilight World by Werner Herzog
Filmmaker Herzog’s novel, based on a true events, imagines the story of Japanese soldier Hiroo Onoda, who defended a small island in the Philippines for 29 years after the end of World War II. (historical fiction)

6/21: The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
From her family’s Vermont lake house, recently widowed actress Casey Fletcher entertains herself by drinking and using binoculars to watch the couple across the lake. When the wife goes missing, creepy coincidences begin, pulling Casey into eerie legends about the area. (thriller)

6/21: Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh
In a medieval village, shepherd boy Little Marek finds himself caught in a power struggle between the lord of the area and new occult forces. By the author of My Year of Rest and Relaxation. (general fiction)

6/21: On Rotation by Shirlene Obuobi
Ghanaian-American medical student Angela Appiah has put all her energy into making choices that will please others. But as her control over things frays, she meets Ricky Gutierrez, who just might help her find what she needs. (general fiction) A Peak Pick!

6/28: American Royalty by Tracey Livesay

6/28: The Invisible Things by Mat Johnson
Sociologist Nalini Jackson joins the first manned mission to Jupiter, only to discover a domed city on Jupiter’s moon, Europa, where they are taken captive. (science fiction)

6/28: Thrust by Lidia Yuknavitch
