If you’re like me and everyone I know, you can’t wait for the upcoming live action Barbie movie, out in theaters on July 21. Here are some book recommendations to get you in the mood to watch Barbie sparkle and shine!
If you want to live in Barbie’s dream house with all of your gal pals, try A Special Place for Women by Laura Hankin, about a women’s only secret society; Brown Girls by Daphne Palasi Andreades, following a group of friends in Queens; or Someone Else’s Shoes by Jojo Moyes, a modern Trading Places following a gym mixup.
If you ship Barbie and Midge, check out When Katie Met Cassidy by Camille Perri, for a later in life sapphic revelation; Count Your Lucky Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur, a Seattle based friends-to-lovers romance; or Becky Albertalli’s Imogen, Obviously, about the “world’s greatest ally” who may not be 100% truthful to herself.
Because even Barbie thinks patriarchal beauty standards are trash, read Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud by Anne Helen Petersen, an examination of women and celebrity status; Hunger, a powerful and raw memoir by Roxane Gay; and Melissa Febos’ Girlhood, which maps the trauma that can accompany adolescence.
