Nine new titles are joining Peak Picks in August!
In fiction, Nicola Dunn debuts with the story of a queer couple in London and the challenges they face when one of them decides to transition in Bellies; Elizabeth Acevedo’s first adult novel focuses on the women of a Dominican American family as they prepare for a wake in Family Lore; James McBride returns with another big-hearted tale of small-town secrets, this time set in a Black and immigrant Jewish neighborhood in 1970s Pennsylvania, in The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store; Ann Patchett’s latest meditates on youthful love as a mother recounts a past affair with a famous actor in Tom Lake; and Daniel Kraus presents the riveting story of a scuba diver who has been swallowed by a whale with only an hour to escape before his oxygen runs out in the sci-fi thriller Whalefall.
In nonfiction, Tom Fucoloro explores how rainy, hilly, car-centric Seattle became the best bike city in America in Biking Uphill in the Rain; R. Eric Thomas explores whether you really can return home again following his move back to Baltimore after decades away in Congratulations, the Best is Over!; Mercury Stardust, AKA The Trans Handy Ma’am, provides renters with a friendly guide to home repair in Safe & Sound; and Susan Casey journeys to the depths of the ocean to reveal remarkable geology and bizarre wildlife in The Underworld.
