At our recent author event with Silvia Moreno-Garcia, an audience member requested more suggestions for haunted media. If you are also looking for such suggestions, please enjoy the following three! All feature movies in one way or another.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Lifelong friends Monserrat and Tristán stumble into an opportunity they can’t refuse – a chance to finish the movie of legendary horror director Urueta. All dream jobs come with a catch, and this one is a curse. Nazis, white supremacy, and misogyny are just some of the demons Monserrat and Tristán face in this fast-paced, menacing, and gritty ode to Mexican film and the occult.
Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M Danforth
An omniscient narrator follows the intertwining lives of the women who work at, attend, and film a movie on the grounds of the haunted Brookhants School for Girls. This is a sapphic gothic horror that is punctuated with wit and meta references to both literary and cinematic horror history. Come for the atmosphere, stay for the tension.
The Shoemaker’s Magician by Cynthia Pelayo
What happens when the thing you love is out to get you? This novel follows Paloma (Polly) and her husband as they work to solve a mystery that only a horror-movie-buff like Polly could possibly solve. Things turn personal when Polly starts to notice that this series of crimes may be connected to a demon summoning she performed several years ago. When these crimes reach into her home and impact her son, Polly has to fight to save what she loves most. Library Journal’s starred review says Pelayo “…writes an enchanting mix of Chicago history, folklore, and haunting atmosphere, anchored by a strong female protagonist.”
Bonus: all these books qualify for the BIPOC or LGBTQIA+ Horror Book Bingo square!
