As we know, Pride celebrations don’t end when June is over – and a great way to keep celebrating is with the Seattle Gay News Celebrates 50 Years Exhibit, currently on view at the Central Library’s Level 8 Gallery through August 25th! On view are excerpts from and commentary on the paper focusing on such issues as public health, marriage equality, and remembering those we lost to AIDS.
In addition to this milestone, the exhibit celebrates the preservation efforts by University of Washington and Seattle Public Library staff and community members, thanks to which all five decades of Seattle Gay News archives are now accessible online from anywhere in the world. You can search and read those issues at the website of the Washington State Library’s Digital Newspapers collection.
At the exhibit’s opening reception on June 27th, the Seattle Channel was on hand to film the festivities and moving remarks shared about the impact of the Seattle Gay News on the LGBTQ+ community; you can see a short video from the event here. Speakers emphasized how important the Seattle Gay News was for Seattle’s queer community, providing news and information as well as opportunities for connection and support. Mayor Bruce Harrell was among those who spoke, and he proclaimed June 27th, 2024, to be Seattle Gay News Day. You can read the full proclamation below (click on the image for more detail).
Visit the Central Library to see and celebrate the exhibit, originally on view at the University of Washington in April 2024, before it closes on Sunday, August 25th!
