Fall means it’s time for a genre that I find delightful: spooky picture books! Even as an adult, I still enjoy reading picture books, and there is something especially fun about the ones that manage to be a little bit spooky. Here are some of my favorites, whether you are a kid or an adult!

There’s a Ghost in this House by Oliver Jeffers
A girl lives by herself in a haunted house–but where are the ghosts she is searching for? This picture book is fun and interactive, with translucent white pages that reveal ghosts hiding in different parts of the house without her knowing.

The Dark by Lemony Snicket
Laszlo is afraid of the dark. In his house, the dark spends most of its time in the basement–until night comes, when it spreads through the entire house. Then one night, Laszlo decides to go into the basement.

Creepy Crayon! by Aaron Reynolds
In a perfect blend of spookiness and humor, Jasper Rabbit discovers a purple crayon that starts doing his homework for him and getting him A’s. At first, he’s ecstatic–but then the purple crayon starts taking over, and he can’t get rid of it. If you’re a fan, check out Creepy Carrots! and Creepy Pair of Underwear! too.

This atmospheric picture book, printed in a unique format to flip pages vertically, alternates between two different perspectives: first from the townsfolk, then from the “witches” haunting the woods. As the story continues, it becomes less spooky and more about misunderstandings and connection.
