Missing Live Music? We’ve Got You Covered, Part 2

Welcome to the second installment of our Live Music series. We hope you enjoyed basking in the glory of all things 1990’s riot grrrl last time. Today, we’re taking a look at the 2015 hip-hop/fashion fusion documentary Fresh Dressed from director Sacha Jenkins, available on Kanopy.

Fashion and music are not two separate entities in hip-hop; they are intertwined. With interviews from Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, Nas, and A$AP Rocky, among others, the documentary explores the role of clothing and style in Black culture, spanning from cotton plantations to the streets of the Bronx. Wildly entertaining and impressively informative for just 82 minutes, Fresh Dressed will walk you through this chronicle of urban fashion all while wearing your adidas, spray-painted denim jacket, and bucket hat. How could that not be a great time?

Fresh Dressed is ultimately an exploration of class, identity, and pride. It’s nostalgic, but also insightful. And while the documentary’s focus may be fashion, it’s also music-drenched with hip-hop from the 80s until the present. After you’ve finished Fresh Dressed, streaming services Freegal and Hoopla are here to keep the fresh vibes going. Check out:

Keep sportin’ it fresh and we’ll see you with our next installment of the Live Music series.
